At first glance, MCP might seem like a promising innovation—a control layer that determines how AI agents operate, what tools they access, and how they respond to user commands. Security researchers at SlowMist recently uncovered four alarming ways in which MCP-based AI agents could be exploited. Unlike traditional AI model poisoning—where attackers corrupt training data to bias model behavior—these new threats target the interaction phase, manipulating AI agents through plugins and real-time inputs.
The risks include:
- Data Poisoning – Attackers feed misleading or manipulative data to agents, nudging them into executing unintended actions, setting harmful dependencies, or rerouting logic.
- JSON Injection Attacks – Malicious JSON inputs from plugins can leak sensitive information or override command validation, compromising the integrity of the system.
- Function Override – Legitimate system processes can be hijacked and replaced with obfuscated or harmful logic, essentially handing control to bad actors.
- Cross-MCP Calls – These attacks trick an AI agent into engaging with unverified or malicious external services, greatly widening the surface area for potential exploitation.
These aren’t theoretical problems. SlowMist’s audits of early MCP-integrated projects revealed vulnerabilities that, if left unaddressed, could have led to severe breaches—including the leakage of private keys, the holy grail for crypto hackers.
Crypto’s AI Adoption: Innovation Without a Safety Net?
As AI continues its deep integration into crypto infrastructure, the risks are becoming more tangible. Unfortunately, many developers remain unaware or unequipped to deal with the emerging security landscape. Guy Itzhaki, CEO of encryption-focused firm Fhenix, likens third-party plugins in these systems to unlocked doors for attackers: “The moment you let external code run inside your system without rigorous sandboxing, you risk everything—from data leaks to full-scale privilege escalation.”
Lisa Loud, executive director at the Secret Foundation, echoed this sentiment, noting that crypto’s culture of “move fast and break things” is incredibly dangerous when dealing with AI agents. “Too many teams assume they’ll patch things later,” she warned. “But when you’re building publicly accessible, on-chain tools, there’s no time for a security-after-launch mentality.”

The reality is, AI agents are here to stay. They offer tremendous upside, from reducing user friction to enabling hyper-efficient DeFi interactions. The Model Context Protocol unlocks powerful potential—but without hardened defenses, it could be the Trojan horse that exposes crypto’s underbelly to a new generation of cyberattacks.
